George G. Hyland Jr., O.P., 73, passed away at his home on Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, surrounded by the comfort of his loving family.
Born Jan. 23, 1939, to Mary E. (Malloy) and George G. Hyland Sr., George was the treasured husband of the late Barbara C. Hyland, a state representative, and devoted father of three: Beth Anne, Kevin, and Dana Hyland. Beloved brother to Brenna Flaherty of Wellesley; Debby Hyland of Mashpee; Robert Hyland of North Falmouth; Mary-Ellen and her husband Chauncy Batchelor of St. Louis; Anne Cecile, Thomas Hyland of Weymouth and several wonderful nieces and nephews.
George was raised on Ainsworth Street in Roslindale. He was a graduate of Boston College High School in 1956 and attended St. John's Seminary from 1956-1961. He graduated from Boston College School of Social Work and was a member of the U.S. Air Force Reserves.
George was employed by the Waltham and Norwood Public School systems as a counselor and was in private practice for 25 years as a child and family therapist. He was an avid golf player of the Foxboro Country Club and was active at St. Mary's Church in Foxboro, as a parishioner, donator of miraculous medals and religious literature, prayer line coordinator and a CCD teacher for fourth-graders. He was also a volunteer for the Community Farm Stand in Foxboro.
George Hyacinth is a member of Our Lady of Providence and the Saint Thomas Aquinas Chapter of the Lay Dominican Order and he professed his Final Promises on Oct. 13, 2012. He chose his Dominican name after St. Hyacinth, who professed that all things in life come from God.
George was a member of the Foxboro community for more than 40 years.
