Peeters Bert

petersFirst President of the International Federation of Married Catholic Priests

Bert Peeters passed away quietly in his own home in Zoersel, Belgium on July 30, 2011.

Albert-Frans Peeters, born in 1915, was ordained priest in 1939. He was active as a teacher and in the youth movement. In 1970 he married Magda van de Peer. He was seasoned in the field of the Third World movement.

He wrote various articles on theology and Church affairs, especially on the priestly celibacy obligation and its abolition. He was the first President of 'Inspraak', the Flemish association of married priests. And he was also the first President of the International Federation of Married Catholic Priests. In that function he published the 214-page book: 'The Married Priest in the Catholic Church" (Dutch only).

The funeral ceremonies will take place on Saturday, August 6, 2011, at 10.00 a.m. in the parish church of Our Lady of the Vineyard, Wommelgemse Steenweg in Wijnegem, following the interment in the Saint Anthony Cemetery in Zoersel.
