Champaign, IL, June 20, 2000
Albert Scheven, 87, of Champaign IL died on June 20, 2000. Born in the Netherlands, he was ordained there in 1939 for the Society of Missionaries of Africa. He spent 31 years in Tanzania in pastoral and educational work. His bishop sent him to Europe to visit the experts of Vatican II and he returned to Africa “born again” in the spirit of the Council. Through a Pastoral Institute he communicated this spirit for 6 years to his brother priests. In 1971 he found a new life, and a wife, Yvetter Cameron. He taught African languages at the University of Illinois from 1972 to 1984. Albert was a constant and generous supporter of church reform, always seeing the world through the eyes of Vatican II.
