Roy Leslie Barton, 64, husband of Carolyn Price Barton, died Tuesday in Resurrection Hospital in Chicago. He was en route to the Mayo Clinic.
In accordance with Mr. Barton's wishes, his ashes will be interred at Hillside, his Bartlesville home, following private memorial services to be conducted by Father Bill Skeehan of the Community of St. James. Professor Jacob Larson, University of Oklahoma Department of Music, will play a farewell trumpet fanfare.
Mr. Barton was a longtime advocate of excellence in education and a memorial in his name has been established to augment the Mary Lou Price girls' scholarship fund established in 1975. Born on June 14, 1932, in Clinton to Redus and Mary Catherine (Richard) Barton. Roy Barton entered St. Gregory's College and preparatory school in Shawnee at the age of 14, graduating in 1950. Following two years of college preparatory work at Portsmouth Priory, Mr. Barton continued with a year of preparation for seminary at San Antonio Seminary Preparatory School. He attended four years of seminary at Emmitsburg Seminary in Maryland. He was ordained a Roman Catholic Priest for the diocese of Oklahoma City and Tulsa in 1960 and served as Associate Pastor of St. John’s Parish in Bartlesville, OK and their mission church in Dewey, OK as well as other assignments in the State of Oklahoma.
Mr. Barton earned his master's degree in history and western philosophy at Georgetown University, spending his last year there as a teacher, lecturing on the History of Philosophy and Medieval History. He earned his doctorate in history and philosophy at Columbia University, New York City.
